ZARCO ZOOMS INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS

Johann Zarco (Kalex) made history in 2016 as the first rider ever to successfully defend the FIM Moto2 World Championship and with it become the first Frenchman ever to win more than one title in Grand Prix Circuit Racing. After romping to his first championship by over 100 points in 2015, Zarco made a steady start to 2016, picking up just 56 points from the opening five races, despite a win in round two, that gave Alex Rins (Kalex) the opportunity to establish a strong championship challenge.

However, an incredible run of mid-season form that encompassed four wins and a second place from five races at Mugello, Catalunya, Assen, Sachsenring and Red Bull Ring reasserted Zarco's status as the man to beat, also earning him a MotoGP contract for 2017. Even a spell of indifferent form after the summer break did little to threaten his points cushion, with Rins struggling to take advantage as Thomas Lüthi (Kalex) hit form with three wins in five races. Zarco's sixth win of the season in Malaysia put the seal on the championship with a round to spare, signing off with a seventh in the final round at Valencia, where second place for Lüthi wrapped up the runner-up spot in the championship.
